Wikis are -:knowledge management systems that support remote collaborative editing of documents. The success of -:Wikipedia helped promote the wiki -:meme, and the -:MediaWiki software in particular. (It also raised to public awareness the idea of -:crowdsourcing)
I am generally interested in the idea of encoding artifacts from all senses and modalities into text (see WikiSophia's Sandbox for myriad examples of this. It's interactive, so feel free to leave your mark there!).
Just like text is a formalization of speech (which enforces a standard, and ensures people understand each other), the textification of formats is formalization of the perception (whether the mode is musical, visual, etc). The process of transcribing brings things into conscious awareness.
